Profile
John Paine has been a manuscript editor, also known as a book doctor, in New York trade publishing for over twenty years. In that time he has edited over 500 titles in a wide variety of fields. Working primarily for several imprints of the Penguin Group USA, he edited numerous New York Times bestselling authors such as John Jakes, Barbara Parker, Greg Iles, Sylvia Browne, Peter Straub, Leslie Glass, Dave Pelzer, and Catherine Anderson, to name just a few. He also has worked with many first-time authors, guiding them to write books that satisfy a wide variety of readers.
Since becoming an independent editor, he has continued his strong track record of editing books that sell. Recently edited fiction titles include New York Times bestsellers Pleasure by Eric Jerome Dickey and Evil, Inc. by Glenn Kaplan; the Erec Rex young adult fantasy series by Kaza Kingsley, sold in an eight-book deal to Simon & Schuster; City on Fire by Thomas J. Fitzsimmons; and Patti Callahan Henry, Driftwood Summer. On the nonfiction side, books published recently include: Shades of Glory: The Negro Leagues by the National Baseball Hall of Fame; Jo Arden Maeder\'s memoir When I Married My Mother; Christopher Van Tilburg\'s Mountain Rescue Doctor; Thom Gossom Jr.\'s memoir Walk-On; and proposals for Lewis Maltby Jr., Our Vanishing Constitution, and Brian Kurth, Test-Drive Your Dream Job.
